STOP expecting family and friends to market for your business

What happens when your circle stops referring you business?

Been having the same conversation with business owners over the years. Let’s say tradies, for example. It’s always the same thing, “Deniz, business is drying up, Our work is getting quiet, not sure what else I can do”. And I always ask them, “how do you normally get your customers?” It’s always the same answer, “Word of mouth and referrals. Everyone knows I’m doing it. So, you know, my friends recommend me”. That’s great. Word of mouth and referrals is the best way to get business because someone that someone else trusts has vouched for you. So it’ll likely convert to a customer anyway, but what about when those referrals dry up? What about when those friends don’t have any friends that is needing your services? Then what happens? How else are you getting your business? “Oh I don’t know, What do you mean?” The issue is lot, a lot of people that are self-employed, they always rely on word of mouth and referrals. But what else are you doing to get customers? Not many people, are doing are SEO or, pay per click marketing such as Google ads.

You can’t expect your friends and family to drive your business all the time. You’re going to have to go out there, you got to build your business, build your brand, build your portfolio up. So, when people are searching for term such as, “Plumbers near me,” your business is going to come up in the maps. It’s going to come up in your search results. It’ll come up in your Google ads, depending on how aggressive you want to go. Everything’s online these days. Not everyone is going to ask their circle, when they need a plumber or, a carpenter or cabinet maker if they know anyone they can recommend all the time. So, what they do is they go to Google, and they search for those services, such as plumbers Melbourne, plumbers, Sydney, a plumber near me, and so on, because when they’re searching online, they get all the answers straight away within half a second. And if they’re not happy with what they found on that search result, they’ll just click down the list to go to the next one.

So, if you are in business, no matter what industry in, never rely on your family and friends to help build your business up. You, got to be out there. You got to be doing your marketing. You got to get marketing agencies to do all the groundwork for you to bring that business. It’s as simple as that.
